Friday Random 10- Live Music Edition

Fri May 16, 2008 at 02:33:42 PM PDT

Welcome to the Friday Random 10, StreetProphet's weekly music discussion group. Grab a beverage of your choice from today's Happy Hour thread, pull up a comfy chair, and start thumbing through the records, 8-tracks, tapes, CD's and mp3's lying around. If you're not into music, here's some noise-canceling earplugs- they'll filter out the music while you stay and chat with us about other stuff :-).

A week ago, a good friend of mine in NYC got in touch to ask if I'd like to go see Yes in July (the week after Netroots Nation, so I'll still be on an adrenaline high :-)). Apparently, seeing them at any venue in NY is tough for him- he doesn't have a car and the venues are not overly accessible, but coming to Boston on the train is much easier. I'm excited not only because I love live music, but also since my friend is like many of you... a friend i haven't met in person yet, only online. He's going to stay with Mr. Brillig and I, so we'll get the chance to hang out and get to know each other offline, too.

So in honor of upcoming shared concert experience, today's Random 10 is made up of songs bye performers I've heard live in concert. I'm old and experienced have been lucky to attend a concert or two in my day, but not everyone goes to them, so let's also include live cuts from your favorite artists!

Let's see what live music has made an impression on me:

  • Cathedral CSNY - The very first big concert I ever attended was CSN (can't remember if it was +/- Y), during my freshman year of college.
  • Limelight Rush - These guys were my second concert, later that year. To say the atmosphere was different is an understatement :-). I've seen them several times, most recently last summer when we took Kid Brillig.
  • In Your Eyes Peter Gabriel - Hands-down my favorite live performer. Favorite artist too, so this is a good thing :-). Waiting for news on a next tour...
  • Solitude Standing Suzanne Vega - Mr. Brillig went with me because That's What You Do for your loved one, even if you don't really care for the music. He said he thoroughly enjoyed her show, much more than her studio work.
  • One Country Midnight Oil - Saw these guys at a WOMAD festival concert in the early 90's. Saw them earlier out in the crowd blending in and watching other acts. It's always fun watching the bands watch each other...
  • Daughter Pearl Jam - I can take or leave Pearl Jam, but a friend is a rabid fan, and he got us tickets. In the 3rd row. I had a good enough time I am going this June again with him :-).
  • Love and Peace or Else U2 - Ever try to get tickets knowing they will sell out before you can click "find tickets"? That's how I got these... I clicked, then 2 seconds later was yelling downstairs "honey can I spend money NOW???!" Show was amazing, even if we ate a lot of cheap meals beforehand and sold our souls for a weeknight sleepover at a friend's for KB :-).
  • O Mary Don't You Weep Bruce Springsteen - I've seen him once in his "regular" guise, but the show I loved best was his Seeger Sessions tour. This was KB's favorite song from the show.
  • Wonders Of The World Five O'Clock Shadow - Not all fantastic concerts are arena-sized. Saw FOCS in a small concert hall and was blown away. Couldn't find a video of the song I like, but this is a bit of their improv. Listen carefully... every sound you hear is vocal, they use NO instruments.
  • Begin The Begin REM - Have seen them twice so far, once just a few days before the 2004 Elections. Unlike some, I appreciate a musician not afraid to put their politics on the table. The conservative folk behind us, though, somehow had missed completely the fact that Michael Stipe is a true blue Democrat. heh.

So what live music is in your favorites?
